Biography

James Dixon presents a stunning universe of shapes in his prolific sculpting oeuvre. Within that decades-long body of work are galaxies of plump annularpieces; leafy fans; spindly, crenelated columns; welcoming round or conicalvessels; and elaborate structures. The stars and planets in each galaxy, theindividual works, celebrate the forms within forms of these conventional or abstractshapes – all of which make for a singular geography of sorts. Big to fine, thesegeographies include separate millimeter-wide rivulets, expressive antennae, andcurious drop-shapes throughout.

Yet, with his constant inspiration, he explores single galaxies at a time, presenting other-worldlyinterpretations within each theme. His current explorations are cast and hand-wrought bronze workfamilies: Chalice, Indigenous, Columns, Tondo and Vessels. Two of his primary inspirations are the theme of social archetypes and the human hunger for an emotional experience that embodies and communicates truth. Sublime yet punctuated with levity, as he says himself. The earthy, rough-hewncontour of his Indigenous-titled category also displays his own interest in Pre-Industrial GlobalArt.Dixon cites his other formative influences as being his parents, historical social movements, audio artists and, notably, the divine.

Though he was winning art awards before college, Dixon earned his bachelor's and Masters of FineArts at Colorado State University. Since then, he has had hundreds of creations and displays in the premier venues – public and private, arts, civic, literary, music, culture – throughout Denver and Colorado, where he keeps his own workshop. In addition to numerous awards, his works have been featured or commissioned by international businesses, including Rolling Stone Magazine, ColoradoHomes & Lifestyles, Vantage Press, LUXE Interiors + Design, DYS Records, and RER Megacorp, a British record label. Most notably, Dixon’s work has been a staple at The Kirkland Museum of Fine &Decorative Art in Denver, Colorado, since 2005, alongside sculptors of international fame such asFrank Lloyd Wright, Frederick MacMonnies, Elsie Ward Hering, Herbert Bayer, and many more.

Artist Statement

I have garnered an inclusive range of artistic sensibilities over time. Included are spontaneity of action, abundant implementation of intuition, and a sustained belief that risk-taking will prevail in the end. Of course, this is an abridged sample of cues that I incorporate into my artistic process. I am certain that additional object-making options exist for me, which I failed to mention. With regard to my technique or method of operations, my overarching narrative consists of applying my artistic sensibilities to whatever brick-and-mortar medium or cerebral challenge is set before me. I was once told by an art critic that I & quot;get it (the sculpture) nearly correct, one hundred percent of the time.” For some reason that I cannot single out, I find relative inner peace in his poignant observation.
